When the symptoms started, what preceded them, how they vary across the day and week, and what makes them better or worse.
The character and location of pain, bloating, bowel pattern, gas, reflux, nausea, and the relationship to meals.
Previous tests, coeliac serology, faecal calprotectin, ultrasound, gastroscopy or colonoscopy. What has already been investigated rarely needs repeating.
Antibiotics, proton pump inhibitors, NSAIDs, iron and supplements; dietary patterns, restrictions and stress load.
What should be looked at next, what can wait, what belongs in public healthcare — and what is not warranted at all.
None of these is ordered routinely. They answer different questions, and which question is relevant is decided by the clinical assessment.

When should I seek acute care instead of booking?
For sudden severe abdominal pain, blood in the stool, black tarry stools, vomiting blood, persistent vomiting, fever with abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing, yellowing of the skin or unintentional weight loss. Which gut tests might be relevant?
Depending on the symptom picture, a SIBO breath test, a stool analysis such as GI Effects, or — in selected cases where food is suspected to contribute — ALCAT may be relevant. Which one is warranted is decided after the clinical assessment, not in advance. A test result is supporting evidence, not a diagnosis.
Can I order a SIBO test directly without a consultation?
Home tests can be ordered separately, but we recommend the consultation first. A SIBO test answers a narrow question, and is not ordered when the symptom picture does not suggest small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, when red-flag symptoms are uninvestigated, or when you have recently had antibiotics or a colonoscopy preparation.
Does MediBalans replace my GP or a gastroenterologist?
No. We work alongside regular healthcare. Where inflammatory bowel disease, coeliac disease, malignancy or anything else belonging in specialist care is suspected, we refer you there, and do so early rather than late.
